About Me

Welcome to Meandering Angler! My name is Paul Smith, and I’m thrilled to share my lifelong passion for fishing, the outdoors, and photography with you. At 67 years old, I’ve spent a lifetime exploring the waterways and wilderness of Vancouver Island and beyond, casting lines, capturing moments, and sharing the joy of angling with others.

A Lifetime of Angling Adventures

My fishing journey began in the midwestern United States, where I spent my early years fishing alongside my father. Those childhood outings were about more than just the catch—they instilled a deep love for the outdoors and an appreciation for the patience, skill, and connection that fishing brings.

When I was 11 years old, my family moved to Canada, settling in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. It was here that my love for fishing truly flourished. Surrounded by pristine rivers, abundant coastlines, and rugged mountains, I spent countless days camping and fishing in what would become my lifelong home. The Comox Valley offered an incredible variety of fishing opportunities, and I eagerly explored them all, from chasing trout in crystal-clear streams to venturing into the saltwater for salmon.

A Career in Sportfishing

For 15 incredible years, I had the privilege of turning my passion into a profession as the owner and operator of a sportfishing business in Nootka Sound. Guiding guests through the breathtaking waters of Vancouver Island was more than a job—it was a chance to share the magic of this region with others.

I specialized in both saltwater and freshwater adventures, targeting a wide variety of species, including:

  • Salmon: The thrill of reeling in a Chinook or Coho is unmatched.
  • Steelhead: These elusive fish demand skill and patience, making the catch all the more rewarding.
  • Trout: From feisty Dolly Vardons, Rainbows to hearty Cutthroats, they’ve always been a favorite. Nothing beats catching trout on light tackle like a fly rod.
  • Bottom Fish: Lingcod. Rockfish and Halibut offered unique challenges and unforgettable meals.

Each trip was an opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life, share my knowledge, and witness the joy of someone catching their first fish or mastering a new technique. Teaching beginners and young anglers became a particular passion of mine. There’s nothing quite like seeing a child’s eyes light up as they reel in their first catch or helping someone gain confidence with the right gear and techniques for their target species.

Photography and the Art of Storytelling

In addition to fishing, I’ve been a dedicated photographer for over 50 years. My camera has always been a trusted companion on my fishing and camping adventures. Whether it’s the golden light of dawn reflecting off the water, the thrill of a hooked salmon breaching the surface, or the quiet beauty of a campsite under the stars, photography allows me to capture and share the stories of these moments.

For me, fishing and photography go hand in hand. Both require patience, observation, and a deep connection to the natural world. Through my lens, I strive to showcase not only the catches but also the landscapes, wildlife, and experiences that make this region so special.

Giving Back and Looking Ahead

Now, in this chapter of my life, my focus is on giving back to the angling community that has given me so much. *Meandering Angler* is my way of sharing decades of knowledge and experience with anyone who loves fishing—or is eager to learn. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just starting out, this website is a resource for tips, stories, and inspiration.

One of my greatest joys is teaching. From helping kids learn the basics of casting to advising newcomers on the right gear for targeting salmon or trout, I’m passionate about making fishing accessible and enjoyable for everyone. I believe that passing on this knowledge not only helps others succeed but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the environment and the traditions of angling.
